Message from the President

Summer has gone and Fall has arrived bringing with it another full schedule of events for the ALA Gateway Chapter.  But before we get to our upcoming events, let’s recap the past several months……

We started September with the ALA Regional Conference in Chicago.  Despite some challenges with the hotel staff being on strike at the Palmer House, it was a great three days full of education, networking and we managed to squeeze in a lot of fun too.  We wrapped up September with a very well attended panel discussion on the hot topic of Lateral Associate Integration and later in the month we partnered with BAMSL’s Young Lawyers Division for the Business Skills Seminar, where we discussed the topics of Pro Bono Work/Ethics, Accounting Tips, Trust Accounts, timekeeping, HR 101 and Navigating the Heart of the Litigation Lifecycle.

The fun and education continued in October with our Annual Law Leader event where we heard from inspirational speaker John O’Leary.  It was a fantastic leadership event that the Gateway Chapter was happy to share with all of our Managing Partners and other Law Leaders.  We also held a Social Connection at TopGolf with valued Business Partners Konica Minolta and Alaris Litigation Services. Thank you to both of these Business Partners for their partnership and camaraderie.

As we approach the end of the year, many of us are looking to wrap up our initiatives of 2018 and plan for upcoming initiatives in 2019.  ALA is no different and I wanted to take this opportunity to invite everyone to review ALA’s 2017-20 Strategic Plan, which includes the following goals:

Goal 1: Define Our Identity
Define a clear, compelling organizational identity that reflects who/what the association represents and that effectively focuses its programs, services and activities.

Goal 2: Increase Member and Business Partner Value
Develop relevant, actionable, timely, responsive resources to increase value of ALA to members, business partners and other legal management professionals.

Goal 3: Enhance Industry Thought Leadership
Become recognized as a thought leader in the legal industry by conducting critical industry research and developing new ideas, innovations and solutions to guide the legal management industry.

Goal 4: Advance Legal Management Professional Development
Advance the knowledge, skills and leadership of legal management professionals and strengthen the role of legal management professionals in the legal industry.

Goal 5: Build Community and Engagement
Build a stronger sense of community and shared purpose and increase engagement among members, chapters, business partners, and other stakeholders.

If you would like to read more about ALA’s Strategic Plan, please visit the strategic plan page on the website and you can also find an update on the status of meeting these goals here, Strategic Plan Update — Q3.

As I have done in my two past President’s Messages, I would like to promote a couple of ALA’s benefits.  The first is ALA’s Career Center.  Did you know you could find a variety of articles and resources to help you develop your skills and enhance your career and even subscribe to a Weekly Career Connection Newsletter?  You can also find information about hiring a legal management professional and information on how to post ads and positions to the job bank.  Please visit this link,, for additional articles and resources in the Career Center.

The second benefit I would like to mention is our ongoing access to relevant content related to hot topics in the legal industry.  One of those hot topics is “Green Initiatives”.  I believe we are all in constant need of ideas and information on how we can help our Firms become more green.  Instead of asking members for content or re-posting an article found online, I reached out to our Business Partners to provide new and original information for us.  Millicare provided content on How to Implement Green Initiatives, and PohlmanUSA on The Importance of Sustainability & “Green Initiatives” in the Legal Industry. A huge thank you to Millicare and PohlmanUSA for providing us with original content on how to make our Firms more green.

As we approach renewal season for Business Partners, it is important to recognize the benefits of the partnership between ALA Gateway and our Business Partners.  What better way to explain those benefits than to ask a Business Partner.  Click here to read about the many benefits that ALA members and Business Partners receive from each other.  Thank you very much to Epiq for being a valued Business Partner and for highlighting the many benefits provided as a result of this important partnership.

I would like to wrap this message up with a couple of reminders.  When using the ALA Gateway Chapter ListServ and/or discussing products or services, please be mindful of following our Antitrust Guidelines, which can be found here,

And lastly, please keep an eye out for the upcoming renewal reminders for both ALA International and Gateway Chapter.  It is my hope that you recognize the value of your membership and that you will continue to be a member next year.

I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and look forward to seeing you at an upcoming ALA event in the near future.
